Best Children’s Books for Worried Kindergartners

Happy Fall! It still feels like summer but adults are out buying school supplies, clothes, and maybe some new shoes for kids about to start school. But there is more to getting ready for school and good children’s books can help kids who are anxious or worried about starting kindergarten. My favorites:

I Am Too Absolutely Small for School by Lauren Child is a Charlie and Lola story; Lola doesn’t ever say she is worried about school but has many reasons why she does not need to go. She can count to 10, why would she need to count any higher? Charlie is ever reassuring that she does need school and everything will be OK (spoiler alert: Charlie is right).  Click here to shop for the paperback at Amazon Smile.

Countdown to Kindergarten by Alison McGhee, illustrated by Harry Bliss is about a young girl who is told by a first-grader that she must know how to tie her shoes for Kindergarten. With only 10 days left to go, will she make it? She tries and worries each day until the fateful day finally arrives, and guess what? The first-grader was wrong. Kindergarten is fine after all. Be sure to look at the illustration on the back cover. Click here to shop for the  paperback at Amazon Smile.
